Verdi Gala Concert: Riga Opera Festival

The Riga Opera Festival closes with a gala concert featuring favourites by Giuseppe Verdi conducted by Andris Poga.

The Riga Opera Festival, founded in 1998 as the first festival of its size and scale in Eastern Europe, has already become a valuable tradition. The festival is highly anticipated by both Latvian audiences and opera-lovers from abroad who form the biggest part of all Riga Opera Festival’s visitors. Every summer, the festival marks the end of the Latvian National Opera’s performance season with an overview of the best moments of the previous year, offering fans a chance to relive their favourite scenes or see what they’ve missed.

Riga Festival

The Riga Music Festival will once again delight music lovers this June with concerts performed by various well-known European symphony orchestras and conductors. Over the years, the festival has developed not only as a music festival, but as a dance and visual art festival as well, so that city residents and guests can enjoy a wide range of cultural performances. The culmination of the Riga Festival will take place in 2014, when the Latvian capital will become the European Capital of Culture.

Riga Cruises along the Daugava River

Mežaparks (Forest Park)

Mežaparks has become a popular place for cycling and roller-skating; roller skates can also be rented here. The vast territory accommodates playgrounds and attractions for children of different ages. On weekends a number of various fairs are held here, and "Slow Food" markets with healthy eco-products sold by local farmers are especially popular.

Mežaparks is also home to the Riga Zoological Gardens, the oldest zoo in North Europe, and a place where the city people love to spend their free time. Mežaparks also accommodates a vast open air stage that once in four years becomes a venue for one of the major events in cultural life, the Song Festival.
