{"id":431,"date":"2013-04-24T11:50:58","date_gmt":"2013-04-24T09:50:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eunis2014.se\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2013-10-30T09:27:46","modified_gmt":"2013-10-30T09:27:46","slug":"about-umea","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/eunis.org\/eunis2014\/travel-and-hote-old\/about-umea\/","title":{"rendered":"Ume\u00e5 and the Ume\u00e5 Region"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Ume\u00e5 is located in the north of sweden in the region V\u00e4sterbotten.\u00a0The county of V\u00e4sterbotten consists of the V\u00e4sterbotten landscape, along with parts of Lapland, \u00c5ngermanland and J\u00e4mtland. This is the second-biggest county in Sweden in terms of area &#8211; the same size as Denmark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ume\u00e5, with its University, has experienced one of Sweden\u2019s largest increases in population since the mid 1960s when the University was founded. The latest addition to the University is the School of Architecture, which together with the\u00a0Institute of Design and Academy of Fine Arts form a creative and artistic campus. Sports is an important past-time for the inhabitants of Ume\u00e5. Skiing in the winter or playing Br\u00e4nnboll. The students visit the large indoor sportscenter IKSU, which have over 10,000 visitors each week. IKSU is situated at the University Campus.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, Ume\u00e5 will be the European Capital of Culture together with Riga.\u00a0Ume\u00e5 holds the country\u2019s largest indoor festival with pop, rock and club music \u2013 Ume\u00e5 Open. The city also takes great pride in holding Europe\u2019s oldest jazz festival.\u00a0Norrlandsoperan is another cultural hub in the region, and creates new and exciting expressions within dance, opera, music and art. The opera has its own symphony orchestra with an admired repertoire.<\/p>\n<h3>Outside of the city<\/h3>\n<p>If you have time to stay on a few days there is a lot to be experienced outside of Ume\u00e5 as well.<\/p>\n<p>The Ume\u00e5\u00e4lven and Vinde\u00e4lven rivers converge northwest of Ume\u00e5. Whilst Ume\u00e5\u00e4lven river contributes to Sweden\u2019s electricity supply, Vindel\u00e4lven river remains one of the most untouched rivers in the country. Everyone is welcome to meet the animals at the Moose House, and a guided tour adds to the excitement. Ume\u00e5 is home to Norrlandsoperan and several international jazz, folk music and rock festivals. The range of events is not least appreciated by the universities&#8217; students. <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ume\u00e5 is the <strong>largest city in northern Sweden<\/strong> and its <strong>117,300<\/strong> inhabitants have a medium age of <strong>38<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Ume\u00e5 is known as the <strong>\u201cCity of Birches\u201d<\/strong>. In 1888, a large fire destroyed much of the city, so birch trees were planted to protect against the spreading of future fires. There are aproximately 3 000 birches planted in the city center.<\/li>\n<li>Annual hours of sunshine: 1,800. On June 21 the sun rises at 2.21 a.m and sets at 10.59 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>Ume\u00e5 will be the <a href=\"http:\/\/umea2014.se\/inenglish\">European Capital of Culture in 2014<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Most of Ume\u00e5\u2019s inhabitants were not born in this city and together they speak approximately <strong>52 languages<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Ume\u00e5 is one of the fastest growing municipalities in Sweden.<\/li>\n<li>Ume\u00e5 has over <strong>180 kilometres of bicycle tracks<\/strong>, making bicycle the transportation of choice for most students, faculty and staff.<\/li>\n<li>Ume\u00e5 is situated in the county with the<strong> lowest crime rate<\/strong> in Sweden.<\/li>\n<li>Ume\u00e5 University was founded in\u00a0<strong>1965<\/strong>\u00a0and is the fifth oldest university in Sweden.<\/li>\n<li>Ume\u00e5 University has\u00a0<strong>34,200\u00a0<\/strong>registered students taught and aided by over 4,200 teachers and supporting staff.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umu.se\/english\/about-umu\/our-campuses\/campus-umea\">Campus Ume\u00e5<\/a>\u00a0is the size of\u00a0<strong>28\u00a0<\/strong>football fields and is located within walking distance of downtown Ume\u00e5.<\/li>\n<li>Ume\u00e5 University receives more than<strong>\u00a0700<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.umu.se\/english\/education\/exchange-students\">exchange students<\/a>\u00a0from over\u00a0<strong>30<\/strong>countries every year.<\/li>\n<li>Over\u00a0<strong>40<\/strong>\u00a0nationalities are represented among students and staff.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ub.umu.se\/en\">University Library\u00a0<\/a>has over 920,000 physical visitors and nearly 1.1 million web visitors per year. There are\u00a0<strong>1.5 million books<\/strong>\u00a0and 28,000 periodicals (including electronic) available in\u00a0<strong>35,000<\/strong>\u00a0shelf metres.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umu.se\/english\/about-umu\/news-events\/campus-culture\">Culture on Campus<\/a>\u00a0arranges free cultural events open to everyone at Ume\u00e5 University.
