EUNIS 2016

Keynote Five – E-infrastructure, the oxygen for advanced Research and Education.

Nowadays all education and research, regardless of field, has a strong
digital component. Even researchers of Medieval books move big data
around of high-res scanned pages of old manuscripts. To facilitate this
ongoing growth of digitization a large e-infrastructure is being
deployed and constantly innovated, specifically tuned towards research
and education. High Performance Computing, Cloud services and the
network are all part of that e-infrastructure. Without it modern
education and research would be limited to commercial generic tools with
severe limitations and high costs. Most parts of the e-infrastructure
are almost invisible to European R&E users. This talk will highlight
some of the e-infrastructure parts and describe the developments that
are taking place to make sure that European universities can be the best
in their fields.
