2017 has been badged by the Open Education Consortium as the Year of Open. Fifteen years after the Budapest Open Access Initiative, 10 years from the Cape Town Declaration how have the ideas and reality of open education, open access, open educational resources (OER), open licenses, open data permeated across sectors and borders? This talk will provide overview of some of the key points in the story of open education to date. With particular focus on open education, and drawing from personal experience, it will explore some of the opportunities and challenges faced in the education sector in opening up resources, practice and people; and some of the seemingly never ending debates in the open education story.
