Information Security Special Interest Group Workshop (part 1)

The workshop will address how universities are challenged by ransomware attacks, what can be done when it happens, and what can be done to prevent this.

We’ll look at the institutional level and at national, collaborative level.

In part one two examples will be presented: a ransomware attack that involved CLOP at University Maastricht, and one that involved Emotet at University Duisburg Essen. You will hear about the actual attacks, the damage, the dilemmas and solutions.

Participants will engage in discussions, sharing experiences and approaches, taking home lessons learnt.

In part two the national perspective will be presented: how can national initiatives such as SURF in the Netherlands and DFN in Germany contribute to diminishing the damage of ransomware attacks and preventing such security breaches. You will hear what collaborative approaches and services are applied, and how these helped in the cases featured in part one.

Participants will engage in (group) discussions, harvesting experience and ideas for measures that can be taken by individual institutions and collaboratively at national level.

Presenters: Bart van de Heuvel (U Maastricht); Remco Poortinga (SURF); Marius Mertens (U Duisburg Essen)

Workshop hosts: Thorsten Küfer (U Münster); Asbjørn Reglund Thorsen (UNIT)
