Opening Keynote: Large Language Models and Education

“The Diamond Age” talks about a not-too-distant future, where an extraordinary interactive book, the Illustrated Primer, is designed to educate and empower young girls, particularly the protagonist, Nell. The Primer aims to bridge existing societal divisions by providing personalized learning experiences, adapting to the reader’s needs, circumstances, and environment. As Nell interacts with the book, it tailors its content to suit her individual learning style, interests, and challenges. Nell’s journey with the Primer transforms her from an underprivileged girl to a resourceful and empowered young woman.

Now obviously, this is only a (very well written) science fiction novel, but what if we could create such a personalized tutor, and could large language models help, at least to some extent, to realize such a diversity bridging teaching environment? The talk will discuss these opportunities, as well as a project proposal we recently submitted to explore related research questions, and where we are in our journey towards personalized learning for everybody.
