Open and traditional universities were perceived as complementary education systems up to the recent past, but are now becoming competitors in the online education market. Secure online exams are frequently in the headlines as the weak link of this market, and may be the bottleneck preventing a quicker development of online degrees for traditional universities. However, the digital transformation process needed to merge on-campus and online education rises trust and transparency challenges that go far beyond student assessment.
