{"id":1096,"date":"2023-10-06T13:57:22","date_gmt":"2023-10-06T11:57:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eunis.org\/eunisrectors18\/?post_type=mec-events&#038;p=1096"},"modified":"2023-10-06T13:57:22","modified_gmt":"2023-10-06T11:57:22","slug":"closing-keynote","status":"publish","type":"mec-events","link":"https:\/\/eunis.org\/eunisrectors18\/events\/closing-keynote\/","title":{"rendered":"Closing keynote"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The digital revolution \u2013 can the university\u00a0survive?\u00a0 \u00a0No and Yes!<\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\">The\u00a0digital revolution is not the only phenomenon that is having significant\u00a0effects on the university but it is exacerbating other forces at work\u00a0and\u00a0it has\u00a0its own manifestations.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Its effects are seen in the materials of\u00a0academic life, in its management and in its acts of communication.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Ultimately, though,\u00a0the digital revolution is\u00a0affecting what it is to think in the university.\u00a0\u00a0Some even suggest that thought is being\u00a0vanquished in the university: the university\u00a0is becoming a\u00a0thought-free zone.\u00a0 \u00a0I am in\u00a0sympathy with these commentaries but I want to suggest that, in themselves,\u00a0they exhibit an\u00a0exaggerated\u00a0bleakness.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Paradoxically, the digital revolution is\u00a0opening new possibilities for the university to realize its long-vaunted hopes\u00a0of itself, both as an\u00a0academic community and in its relationships with and\u00a0mission towards the world.\u00a0\u00a0And these\u00a0possibilities, at once internal and extra-mural, can be\u00a0glimpsed not only in\u00a0the university\u2019s teaching function but in its work of inquiry and research and\u00a0engagements with the wider society.\u00a0\u00a0There is much to\u00a0play for.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Chairperson:\u00a0<strong>Ilkka Siissalo<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The digital revolution \u2013 can the university\u00a0survive?\u00a0 \u00a0No and Yes!
