The digital future of universities is directly and indirectly on the European agenda. University leaders have launched the concept of academic digital autonomy, retaining control by universities of data and infrastructure. The European Commission is aiming to articulate specific initiatives for universities to further promote Open Science and interoperability for higher education through a European Learning Model. We are at a point in time, where concepts and ambitions are being defined. Moreover, the European Union is finalising the legal framework for the digital transformation with new rules regarding platforms, data sharing, artificial intelligence and more.
In this context, it is important that universities are explicit about what digital future they want to see for themselves: what would be the best of all worlds? And if that does not work, what would be a second-best, realistic alternative?
