Sophia Papaioannou
Vice Rector of Academic Affairs, International Relations and Outreach (since September 2023), Sophia Papaioannou, is Professor of Latin Literature at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She is, on behalf of NKUA, the Scientific Director of CIVIS, the European Civic University Alliance, in which NKUA is a founding partner since 2019. CIVIS comprises 11 European Universities. NKUA has been one of the three Greek Universities that embraced the vision of the European University from the beginning.
She holds degrees from the University of Crete (BA, summa cum laude in Classics, 1992), and the University of Texas at Austin (MA, 1994, PhD 1998). Prior to joining the NKUA in 2007, she taught at the Universities of Tennessee-Knoxville, Akron (Ohio), and Cyprus. In 2019, she held the Stanley J. Seeger Research Fellowship at Princeton University, Center for Hellenic Studies, and she has been visiting professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University and Shanghai Normal University.
Her research interests comprise Ancient epic, Latin literature of the Age of Augustus and the early empire, Roman Comedy, Ancient Rhetoric, and the Literature of the Late Antiquity. She has written, edited and co-edited 21 books (De Gruyter, Brill, Routledge, Cambridge Scholars) και over 100 articles and chapters in referred international publications. She is a member of the Society of Classical Studies (USA), and life member of the Classical Association of Canada, and the Classical Association of the Middle West and South (USA). She is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Vergilian Society of America, and on the Editorial Board of the monograph series Brill Research Perspective in Classical Poetry (Brill Academic Publishers). She has reviewed articles for most leading journals in the field of Classical Studies, she has organized or co-organized 12 international conferences in Greece and abroad, has delivered over 100 talks at refereed international conferences, and has been invited / guest speaker at over 40 Universities worldwide.
She has reviewed grant proposals for several research foundations both in Greece (HFRI) and abroad, including the European Research Council (ERC).
