Head of Education Unit, Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences, Krems (Austria)
Dr Michael Schmidts is a physician-educator and Master of Medical Education who leads the Education Unit at Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences. Drawing on more than 25 years in medical education, he designs learner-centred curricula, oversees university-wide assessment systems and steers faculty development initiatives.
Earlier, he helped modernise medical training at the Medical University of Vienna—creating Austria’s first skills lab, standardised-patient programme and OSCE—before directing programme planning at the Institute for Medical Education in Bern. An early pioneer of technology-enhanced learning, he has built multimedia simulation tools, a handheld “paper-free” practical exam and Drupal-based course and item-bank platforms.
Regularly invited to run international workshops on assessment, skills training and curriculum design, Dr Schmidts also served as Chair of GMA-Austria (2015–2022) and was honoured with Austria’s national “Ars Docendi” teaching award in 2015.
