Abel Caballero
Abel Caballero is the mayor of Vigo since 2007.
He holds a PhD in Economics both from the universities of Cambridge and Santiago de Compostela and a Master’s Degree in Economics from the University of Essex. He has a broad academic experience, teaching in several Spanish and European universities, among others at the Universidade de Vigo, where he obtained the rank of University Professor of Economics.
He has also a long political career, serving as Spanish Minister of Transport, Tourism and Communication (1985-1987), member of the Spanish Congress of Deputies (1982-1997), member of the Galician Parliament (1997-2001), president of Vigo Port Authority (2005-2007) and president of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) since 2015.
Author of several novels and many research books and articles, Abel Caballero was involved in different research projects in the field of economics, transport and infrastructures and was honoured with the title of Officer of the Spanish Merchant Shipping.
