Open Science Special Interest Group

Open Science (OS) fosters transparency, accessibility, and collaboration in research. It enhances
research quality and integrity by making methodologies, data, and findings openly available, improving
findability and reproducibility while reducing the risk of scientific misconduct.

For university networks like EUNIS, Open Science is not only a key driver of collaboration and research excellence but also a pillar of digitalisation efforts. Open Science strengthens research partnerships by facilitating data and resource sharing across institutions, amplifies the visibility and impact of research, and fosters a culture of openness, collaboration, and integrity.

Mission:

To acknowledge the importance of Open Science for research, collaboration, and institutional strategy, the SIG Open Science will serve as a platform for EUNIS members to:

  • coordinate efforts in implementing Open Science principles,
  • address common challenges,
  • share best practices
  • develop strategies to promote all aspects of Open Science within EUNIS.

Scope: Open Science Hubs (OSH)

To reach the goals, activities will be deployed that are tied together by the concept of “Open Science Hubs” (OSH). We understand OSH as central entry points and signposts for OS requests at Higher Education Institutions (HEI) that make OS more visible, synergetic and accessible for researchers, HEI staff, and other stakeholders.

  • OSH increase the visibility of OS activities, resources and services at HEIs, directly benefiting researches while also showcasing HEI accomplishments
  • OSH will foster collaboration between EUNIS partners by boosting joint events, knowledge exchange, and aligning OS strategies OSH become beacons that benefit HEI reputation, uphold European values and increase European collaboration, e.g. with University alliances (e.g. EPICUR, Unite!) or other OS networks (e.g. EOSC, euroCRIS, CESAER)

Upcoming activity:

Goals:

  1. Promote Open Science within EUNIS
  2. Foster collaboration within EUNIS
  3. Enable knowledge sharing
  4. Facilitate institutional transformation

Activities:

With the Open Science Hub as leading principle, the SIG will:

  • provide a general rationale and explanation to promote OSH to HEI stakeholders (e.g. other departments, executive boards).
  • use conceptual frameworks to analyse benefits of and challenges for OSH
  • analyse and learn from pertinent use cases within EUNIS and beyond
  • collect and select OS activities, resources, and best practices to propose a catalogue of tools to be provided via OSH
  • develop a set of recommendations and a how-to guide for HEIs to build up and maintain OSH
  • engage with other networks/alliances and promote the concept of OSH at events

Roadmap:

  1. Introduce the SIG at EUNIS2025 and invite interested members
  2. Develop OSH concept based on outlined actions and conduct analysis
  3. Develop set of recommendations and how-to guide for HEIs
  4. Promote and test concept with EUNIS partners to create more OSH
  5. Establish connections between OSH within EUNIS and explore relations with other OS networks

Future activity:

  • to be decided at the 3 June Pre-conference kick-off workshop.

On this page you will find the output and results of future activities. First expected output: results of Pre-conference workshop on 3 June, at EUNIS Congress in Belfast.
